It is so hot the first day there! 30C and humid with ferocious mosquitoes! The campsite is right on the beach and it is full of retired Quebecois!!
Nous arrivons a South Padre Island en debut Decembre. La premiere journee il fait tres chaud et humide! Il y a des moustiques feroces en plus. Le camping est sur le bord de la plage et il est rempli de retraites Quebecois!
Le deuxieme jour la temperature baisse rapidement. Les prochains 5 jours il y eu une tempete et meme de la neige. La nuit on avait l'impression que la roulotte allait s'envoler ou tomber sur le cote!
The second day however the temperature dropped suddently and the next 5 days we were in a crazy storm with wild winds and it even snowed! In the night time, it felt like our Lil Bigfoot was either going to fly away or tip on its side...
Le moral fut tres bas pour tous (surtout moi) et apres 4 a 5 jours a endurer des temperatures pres de 0C, nous sommes alles a l'hotel pour une soiree.
The moral was low (especially mine) and after 4 or 5 days of enduring low temperatures and gusty storm winds, we caved in and went to a hotel. We were surprised to find out that the price of a hotel room in South Padre in the low season was the same as our camping fee...oh well!

WoW! J'ai vu la tellement d'oiseaux cools et en grand nombre: epoustouflant! Des spoonbills roses, tout les herons etaient la: le vert (mon prefere), le grand bleu, le petit bleu, le tricolore. le 'rougeatre', celui de nuit et les egrets aussi: le snowy et le geant. Il y avait aussi des alligators gigantesques et un petit bebe mignon (pour un alligator).
I still really loved South Padre even though we had rough conditions because of the Birding and Nature Centre. This was a total surprise to me. I had researched birding for our trip and never came across this but it was by far the best place to see birds. It was like being in a candy store for birders!
I saw so many birds, favorites of course were the roseate spoonbills and all the herons: the great blue, the little blue, the green, the night and the tricolor. The egrets were there too, the snowy and the giant. There were alligators as well some huge and a baby which was sorta cute (for an alligator).
There were guided walks and I went on two of them, one by myself and one with the family. Henri and Charlie seriously impressed the guides with how good they were at spotting and naming most of the birds there. I guess they sort of listen when I babble excitedly when I see birds!

Oh, did I not mention that the wooden structure at the entrance of the state park we were camping at collapsed in the night due to the storm?

The boys and Gareth continue to surf even if it's cold and miserable out!

Durant la tempete, le jour, nous sommes alles visiter une grosse tortue appelee Domino.
During the storm in the day, we went to visit a giant turtoise called Domino.

Due to the unusual cold snap, a lot of sea turtles died. Here's Charlie who found one one the beach. Sad.
A cause de la baisse de temperature anormale, plusieurs tortues de mer sont mortes. Charlie en a trouve une sur la plage.
